Ученые установили, что слоны являются единственными животными, которые используют все четыре ноги как для ускорения, так и для торможения.
Группа ученых во главе с Джоном Хатчинсоном из британского Королевского ветеринарного колледжа опубликовала соответствующее исследование в журнале Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Ученые водили шесть молодых индийских слонов с разной скоростью по платформе с датчиками, фиксирующими силу, с которой животные отталкивались от земли каждой ногой.
Выяснилось, что как передние, так и задние конечности слонов получают одинаковую нагрузку при передвижении с различной скоростью и с различным ускорением. Это дало ученым повод сравнить слонов с полноприводными автомобилями.
У других четвероногих животных, как правило, при разгоне используются задние конечности, а при торможении — передние.
