Новым автомобилем безопасности «Формулы-1» станет Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. Спортивный SLS AMG сменит в качества «сэйфти-кара» Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG, который использовался в этой роли в 2008 и 2009 годах.
Производство Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG началось в январе 2010 года. Этот автомобиль оснащается атмосферным двигателем V8 мощностью 571 лошадиная сила. Для сравнения, мощность современных двигателей «Формулы-1» — около 720 лошадиных сил. По данным производителя, с нуля до ста километров в час суперкар способен разогнаться за 3,8 секунды. Максимальная скорость SLS AMG – 315 километров в час.
В рекламе дорожной версии Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, появившейся в январе этого года, снялся гонщик команды Mercedes GP, семикратный чемпион «Формулы-1» Михаэль Шумахер. В России стоимость подобного автомобиля составляет 11 миллионов 500 тысяч рублей.
За руль сэйфти-кара (или как их называют в США — пейс-кара), который получит традиционную для Mercedes серебрянную окраску, снова сядет 38-летний гонщик DTM Бернд Майландер. Сопровождать его будет чиновник FIA Пит Тиббетс.
Автомобиль безопасности во время Гран-при постоянно находится в боксах, и появляется на трассе в случае аварий или плохих погодных условий. Задача автомобиля — сопровождать пелотон, контролируя скорость болидов «Формулы-1» на трассе.
Официальным медицинским автомобилем чемпионата по-прежнему будет Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Estate.
