Пройдя трудный путь становления и развития, сегодня ГАИ МВД Украины стоит на защите жизни, здоровья, прав и свобод граждан, на страже правопорядка и безопасности дорожного движения.
При этом ежесекундно сотрудники ГАИ чувствуют риск и опасность и, несмотря на трудности, выполняют свой долг, что заслуживает благодарности и уважения. Однако приоритетом службы работников ГАИ, безусловно, является помощь людям, сохранение жизни и здоровья участников дорожного движения, особенно детей. Обезопасив от несчастных случаев на улицах и автодорогах жизнь хотя бы одного человека, служба Госавтоинспекции каждый раз подтверждает свою миссию. Это, безусловно, вызывает уважение ко всем сотрудникам автоинспекции.
Сегодня исполнилось 13 лет со дня основания ГАИ МВД Украины. 14 апреля 1997 года Кабинет министров Украины утвердил положение о «Государственной автомобильной инспекции Министерства внутренних дел». История же этой службы берет свое начало в далеком 1936 году, когда она была включена в состав Главного управления Рабоче-крестьянской милиции НКВД СССР. Тогда же была подписано постановление «Об утверждении Положения о ГАИ Главного управления Рабоче-крестьянской милиции НКВД СССР».
Не секрет, что в современных условиях от уровня развития транспорта, степени безопасности его движения транспортными путями в значительной мере зависит успешность реализации социально-экономических программ Украины. Создание транспортных транснациональных коридоров, которые будут проходить через Украину, требует от нашего государства обеспечения безопасности движения в соответствии с европейскими и мировыми стандартами. Сегодня осуществляется техническое переоснащение подразделений ГАИ: вводятся новейшие системы надзора за дорожным движением, регистрации транспортных средств, учета дорожно-транспортных происшествий и т.д. Также значительное внимание уделяется повышению профессионального уровня работников ГАИ.
